Information about the many ailments that green tea benefits floods the media. The weight loss effects of green tea is one of its more famous benefits, as is its heart protective benefits, and the leaves that make this brew are now found concentrated as a health supplement. So what is the evidence for these benefits of green tea.
Green Tea and Heart Health
In accordance with work publicized by H.N Mishra and V.R Sinija in 2008 in the Nutritional and Environmental Medicine journal, green tea has beneficial properties for heart health. This benefit is a result of this beverages positive effects on LDL “bad” cholesterol levels, and also its ability to reduce the amount of blood clotting in the blood stream. This is important since thrombosis, which happens when abnormal blood clots form is a key factor for both stroke and heart attack. Polyphenol antioxidants are the ingredient in green tea that are behind the benefits for heart health.
Green Tea Weight Loss
The polyphenol antioxidants in green tea are also shown to promote weight loss. Work published by Di Pierro and his colleagues in the Alternative Medicine Review in 2009 asserted that these polyphenol antioxidants, especially one type called catechins, boost our metabolism and therefore bring about green tea weight loss.
In this study, Di Pierro and his team tested the efficiency of green tea supplements and they discovered that these supplements brought about a significant amount of fat loss when combined with a low-calorie diet for a period of 3 months compared to a low-calorie diet alone.
This weight loss effect of green tea is explained by catechins helping to create heat in the body, a process called thermogenesis. In addition to this there is new evidence to show that green tea also helps to decrease the amount of fat that we absorb from the food we eat.
Because green tea appears to have such a beneficial effect upon weight maintenance and overall health, it can play a key role in promoting a healthy lifestyle that protects against obesity, heart disease, diabetes and even cancer.
